The current artist in resident

Masashi Echigo (Japan)

It is obvious that I do not work  individually. By working as an artist, I create a function or find a new value in a society, thereby often encountering people who have different backgrounds. My intention is to not only focus on a result as an end of my artistic activity. I am more concerned with the process and with peculiarities of sites of memory in order to bring complex constellation of social relationships into my work. I am also interested in a process of endless “commitment” with the outside world as in relational art, and would like to use “relationship” and “reconstruction” as key words in my artistic work. In my projects, the work produced by this process cannot remain my solo creation. In Yogyakarta, Indonesia, I am planning to have a project to relate with the developing urban situation. The Project is supported by Jogja National Museum, Japan Foundation and Pola Art Foundation.

Masashi Echigo born 1982 in Toyama, Japan. Lives and works in Ghent, Belgium.

Since 2008, He has lived and spent lengthly periods of time in numerous European cities, participating in collective shows over the past few years. Each experience in each place is represented by individual installations that are spatially and emotionally tied to their context. Each installation, even though conceived independently, necessarily enters into a dialogue with the others, constructing a unique narrative landscape that is in the process of evolution, serving as evidence of his voyage. Like the storyboard for a film, this allows for an unfolding of important events in the relationship between Masashi and the history, inhabitants and culture of, and dominant issues and objects in his host locations. Past exhibitions include Dublin Contemporary 2011, Dublin (2011) ; HIAP Cable Gallery, HIAP, Helsinki (2011); the National Gallery of Modern & Contemporary Art, Rome (2010); BE-PART Platform voor actuele kunst, Waregem, Belgium (2010); Factory Kunsthalle, Krems, Austria (2009).

Haryanto ‘tok’ Basuki (Indonesia/Australia)

Lukisan saya bertemakan tentang URBAN LANDSCAPE.

Rene Lysloff (USA)

is American ethnomusicologist

René T.A. Lysloff is an Associate Professor of Music (Ethnomusicology and Composition) and came to UCR in the fall of 1996 after teaching two years at the University of Pittsburgh. In his work on Javanese music, Lysloff has published articles in Ethnomusicology (Journal of the Society for Ethnomusicology), Asian Theatre, and other journals and collections (including the Garland Encyclopedia of Music).

His most recent book is about shadow theater and music in rural Central Java based on past fieldwork in Java (1979-80, 1986-87, and 1994), published by KITLV (Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies).  He also translated a contemporary Indonesian novel (in three volumes) by Ahmad Tohari entitled Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk [A Dancer of Paruk Village]. The novel explores the lives of a rural dancing girl and her childhood sweetheart as they experience the tumultuous changes in Indonesia from 1946 to 1971.

The English translation, titled The Dancer, is published as a single volume through the Lontar Foundation ( Jakarta) and distributed worldwide.  Lysloff has studied and performed music of the Javanese gamelan (gong-chime ensemble) for approximately twenty-five years.  He has performed with several major ensembles in Java, including the national radio broadcast studio (RRI) gamelan ensemble of Yogyakarta, the radio broadcast studio gamelan of Purwokerto, and renowned musical troupes accompanying Javanese shadow theater in the Banyumas region.. Since 1995,

Lysloff has also been exploring issues related to changing technologies and their impact on cultural practices and epistemologies involving music.  Lysloff co-edited (with Leslie Gay) a ground-breaking collection of articles titled Music and Technoculture (2003, Wesleyan University Press). He wrote many articles, including one on the ethnographic study of music communities on the Internet, titled “Music Life in Softcity: An Internet Ethnography.” published in the journal, Cultural Anthropology (2003).

As an scholar/artist in residence at the Jogja National Museum, Lysloff has been involved in several major projects, such as another literary translation (a two-volume novel by Ahmad Tohari, Bekisar Merah), several musical compositions, and multiple collaborative creative works (The Voice of the Siren, [Bandung in February 2011]).  His primary and most significant work is a major collaborative study conducted with Iwan Wijono and Dwi Wahyuni (two local performance artists concerned with both tradition and innovation).

This project, still in progress, consists of documenting and archiving the unique sounds of traditional Yogyanese life—sounds that are slowly disappearing because of modernization and industrialization.  The intent is to seek out those sounds that are now endangered, sounds threatened by modernity and development.  Lysloff, Iwan, and Dwi have been searching for sounds that once defined the city of Yogya as the cultural center of Java, sounds of traditional street musicians, of street vendors, of horse-drawn carriages, of palace rituals, and of nature—the sounds that made up the soundscape of Yogya’s past.  Indeed, these are the everyday sounds that our grandparents and great grandparents may have heard during their lifetimes but are now virtually gone, replaced by noisy motorcycles, blaring radio and TV, honking of buses and trucks, and all the other sounds of modernity common to any and all urban centers throughout the world.

The purpose is not only to capture these sounds but also identify and map them geographically and culturally.  The project involves interviewing a range of individuals, from street musicians and street vendors to ritual specialists, artisans, and experts, documenting their understandings of a sound and the activity that produces it. The project is expected to result in a published monograph supplemented by audio and video recordings as well as extensive photographic documentation.  Their vision is to develop an open-ended and ongoing sound archive of everyday in the city of Yogyakarta
